I'm a Leader!

What is leadership? By definition it is an act or instance of leading; guidance; direction (dictionary.com, 2010). As a manager your personal success will directly correlate with your effectiveness to lead your employees. This is especially true in the human services field as we are in the business of working with and providing for people. Social work managers who do not strive to gain and develop the characteristics, knowledge, and skills of a good leader will not be as powerful in their management careers as those who do. The following material will discuss the various principles and theories that support this concept, their application to 21st century rural practice, and the ethical considerations that might arise.

The Elements of Leadership´╗┐

Wienbach (2008) describes leadership as an effort to influence an´╗┐d shape our employees behaviors and attitudes so that they are supportive of the agencies mission. By doing this managers hope to create employees that are effective and efficient with their service provision, and seek to do things that are in the best interest of both the clients and the company. Even those tasks that are traditionally thought of as unpleasant (i.e paperwork) are completed with minimal complaint and in a positivie fashion. According to our book this can all be accomplished through effective leadership.

Those who are successful in leading and motivating their employees do so because they have developed a solid rapport with their staff. Their is mutual respect and understanding for each others abilities and duties. This promotes trust in the decisions and expecations that are handed down to the employees, as well as trust for the manager that the employees will meet those expectations (Weinbach, 2008). To be an effective leader you must possess these and many more qualities discussed throughout this WIKI.
